On day 2 we started earlier than we did on day one and we agreed to cover fewer centres and try to spend more time at the centres. Many of the themes from day one were also on display here but have been excluded for brevity. #### Agriclinic PK Halli There are two centres running at the agri clinic simultaneously. Some of the children sit inside while some others sit outside. There is ample space here but there are also a large number of children to cater to. I spoke to some boys at the centre here while Srilakshmi played with other children outside. I learnt about the kind of activities they were doing at the centre. It was interesting to see the boys very excited to show off their “multiplication tables” capabilities to me and most seemed comfortable at least to 10. I also had a chance to take a look at the “tuition” book of some of the boys to get a sense of the work that they were doing and found that it was quite similar to their school work. #### PK Halli Station This centre was conducted in an open area with a tarpaulin and mats on the ground. There were quite a few children here so we broke into smaller groups with each group engaging with a few children. With my group I wanted to converse with them and learn more about them. This felt a bit unfair since other groups were playing games but I was able to engage the children by asking them about themselves. Many children here were school going children and some even were going to a private English medium school. The children were quite confident and were able to answer my questions pretty easily. They were enamoured by the iPhone that my father and Bhagya were using. When I told them they were free to ask them about it, they spoke to my father and took a photo on the iPhone. #### Valmikinagar PK Halli We didn’t get to spend a lot of time at this centre since we were in a hurry to move to the next area but we got a chance to talk to the children here for a few minutes. We played a few games quickly with them and sang one or two songs. The centre was conducted in the verandah of an under construction house with a tarpaulin on the floor. We realised that there were actually a lot more people than the space could accommodate. We discussed with the Sakhi team if it was possible to add another centre to PK Halli given the number of children here. There were a lot of community members who had gathered around as well. #### Chitwadigi Slum We were very late by the time we arrived at this space. The centre normally happens on the terrace of Archana’s house but the children had gathered at a temple eagerly waiting for us. The community animator mentioned that they were facing trouble from the temple folks who were not happy with some caste children and menstruating women at the centre. As we were at the centre an old man came to talk to us about the temple and my father engaged with him about it. In our fear of community repercussions we avoided making too much noise here and in some ways moved away from the Vismaya Kalike ethos. Perhaps, we were also tired and we weren’t able to bring a lot of energy at this centre. Nonetheless we tried to engage the children with a game where every child shared their favourite fruit and others would continue with it. This did not go too well since there were too many children and it was going far too slowly. This exercise did allow us to see however the disparity in children. While some were very confident and knew many fruits, some children really struggled with it and had to be supported quite a bit. #### Other General Observations - The reality of the situation here might be bad in a lot of other aspects but from a learning standpoint it doesn't appear to be too bad. This obviously doesn't make sense so I suspect that the people Sakhi have been working with are already doing quite well.
