- Interpreting emergency or difficult situations is tough. We look to others to interpret but everyone feels the same way. Ambiguity leads to bystander effect. People don't want to overreact.
- People often provide support in private. But that doesn't really help solve for bystander effect.
- Having a friend with us makes us more prone to be brave and not be a bystander.
- We can all learn to be brave and speak up. It's not an innate behaviour.
- People who stand up to bullies are higher in empathy but also crucially are less worries about being liked.
- In a group setting our responses change at a neurological level. Our brains not only have to think about our behaviour but also needs to anticipate how others might act.
