CLT identifies three main types of cognitive load:
1. **Intrinsic Cognitive Load**: This is the inherent difficulty associated with the material being learned. It varies depending on the complexity of the task and the learner’s prior knowledge.
2. **Extraneous Cognitive Load**: This refers to the load imposed by the way information is presented. Poor instructional design can increase extraneous load, making learning less efficient.
3. **Germane Cognitive Load**: This type of load is related to the effort put into processing information and forming schemas, which are mental structures that help organize knowledge. Germane load is beneficial as it contributes to learning.
These types of cognitive load can interact with one another, influencing overall learning efficiency.
