Unique learning activities to boost student engagement
Ira Project is a high school STEM platform designed to support teachers in creating a more engaging learning experiences
VIDEO — Demo: Reshoot to capture learning activities
#### Reimagining How we Learn
For centuries, learning in school has followed the banking model, where students passively consume content and answer questions. We're convinced that there has to be a better way to learn, and we have built a platform to give teachers a toolbox of better learning experiences they can assign students:
1. Learn by Teaching - Based on the Feynman Technique, students learn by teaching our AI iterating on their explanation until the AI is able to answer some questions
2. Knowledge Zap - A derivative of standard Multiple Choice Questions, this activity leverages spaced repetition and interleaving to build knowledge and retention
3. Reason Trace - A spin on the popular "Wordle" game where students are asked to identify the reasoning pathway that lead to a particular answer, designed to build divergent thinking and creativity
4. Step Solve - Based on the worked example effect, an activity where learners work through difficult problems one step at a time
5. Human vs AI - An activity where students come up with questions that the AI cannot answer. Designed to build critical thinking and higher order cognitive skills.
6. Active Reading - To build comprehension and critical reading ability, this activity asks learners to highlight and annotate key parts of the content they're reading.
7. + More (Coming Soon) - We're currently working on activities that allow learners to create concept maps, design experiments and construct arguments.
#### Our Principles (Cards)
Equity - We believe that it is imperative that our activities cater to a diverse set of learners. Our goal is to help every learner enjoy STEM and engage with the content in the way they feel most comfortable.
Productive Failure - Our activities leverage initial struggle as a pathway to deeper learning, encouraging resilience and making students more comfortable trying out new things.
Scientific Basis - All our activities are designed keeping in mind the latest research in learning science and are tested rigorously. You can find the citations to papers and the principles in the learning activities page.
Holistic - We ensure that we offer a wide range of activities that involve many different skills, so every learner has the opportunity to thrive. The skills involved in each activity is clearly marked and teachers can see data on how their students perform on each of these dimensions.
We love hearing from you. Have a suggestion for a new type of activity? Write to us and if it aligns with our principles, we'll build it for you!
#### Why now?
Generative AI has reshaped the world in profound ways. Yet, we continue testing for skills that AI can easily replicate. Our education system risks turning students into less capable versions of ChatGPT. At the same time, generative AI has also allowed us the capability to create unique learning activities to cater to every single learner. There's no better time than now to reimagine how we learn as a society.

#### Data and Dashboards
At the Ira Project, we're committed to help teachers with the right tools to support data-driven decision-making. Our activities allow us to give teachers visibility on not just their academic ability but also across six dimensions of student mastery - memory, understanding, application, analysis and evaluation.
At Ira Project, we're committed to help schools and leaders with the right tools to support data-driven decision-making. Our assessments allow students to not only be assessed in terms of their conceptual understanding and academic ability, but also on skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century. Our four part assessment allows us to measure students and classes across five dimensions - Memory, Understanding, Application, Analysis and Evaluation.

# AI and Safety
- Built by Humans.
- We're taking safety and privacy very seriously at Ira Project! That's why you'll never see us brag about hundreds and thousands of activities or questions. We're building slowly and intentionally, with each activity vetted and carefully thought through.
- No Uncurated Datasets.
- We understand how important it is that we get things right and that the AI not hallucinate or make mistakes and confuse students. We have a separate engine for each and every question that's trained on very specific concepts, so the chances of error or going off-topic is minimal.
- AI Shouldn't be a Blackbox.
- For anyone interested, we're happy to walk educators through our code base and explain to them how everything works. We're pretty clear that if we can't explain it to teachers, it's not good enough to ship to children.
- Limiting LLMs.
- Large language models are just what their name suggests. At Ira Project we use them to process language and nothing more than that. We also allow educators a full view into what prompts we're using and a choice on what LLM they would prefer we use.
