Today the children at Avalahalli were wanting to celebrate an ethnic day at the centre. They were planning on collecting money from everyone to raise funds for the same. I thought Guru's advise on collecting money anonymously would be a great way forward and suggested it to the children but they had already collected money and were asking for permission to do the function This is the first time we've ever had people contribute money directly and this made me both happy and a bit concerned.
On the one hand it was nice to see the community move towards being more self sufficient and not depend on us for everything. Particularly heartening to see was the older children taking on more responsibility on the money part since some of them have begun earning money. On the other hand I was worried that some families who cannot afford to contribute might feel left out or worse feel pressured to contribute. I made sure to tell the children who asked that they were welcome to do as they pleased in "their" centre but also made sure to remind them of the values of our centre and make sure to not discriminate anyone and to allow everyone to have an equal part regardless of contribution.
