I had an incredibly rollercoaster day today at one of our centres. This centre is one of our newer centres and I hadn't visited in a long time. The facilitator had changed the timings recently deciding to start and end early citing safety issues in the area. However, we had spent a lot of time in this community building a rapport with them and I was quite surprised that this was an issue. I didn't read too much into it and like usual trusted the judgment of the community and the facilitator. We were singing and dancing at the centre and generally having a good time when suddenly we started hearing loud swearing. Some youth in the area were walking by and they made it a point to yell through our windows and gates foul language rather aggressively. I was quite shook but the children were curious and started to peep over the compound to see who it was. This only emboldened these boys and they started shouting more. They eventually walked away and I was feeling extremely concerned for the safety of the facilitator and the children. However, within thirty seconds of the youth shouting two women showed up at the centre. Neighbours who had heard the commotion immediately came to the centre since they knew the facilitator would be alone. They had come just to make sure that everything was okay. It was incredibly powerful to see the community demonstrate it's resilience right in front of my eyes. When we set up the centre, we had spent time with them, heard them and involved them in the process of setting up the centres and it had paid off handsomely.
