Children need options for what activities to do to truly have agency. Today I decided that I would take a bunch of puzzles printed out including word searches, join the dots and some simple brain games. The idea was that the children could choose what worksheet they wanted. I also realised that children are just super bored and that is often the reason for chaos and fights. They need something to keep their interest and these worksheets I hoped would do that. While the latter of my assumptions did work the first assumption did not hold. The children have been so used to school and getting things right. Many children just wanted me to give them the answers to finish the activity particularly the younger children with respect to activities that were for older children. They would seek my validation and praise when they finished an activity and many even wanted to take the activities home as homework. I dialogued with them and explained the intent of these activities but I suspect that perhaps the solution is just to have more of them so the children actually have choice on things they can work through themselves.
