I have been feeling for a while that I was stagnating in my learning at the center and part of that has been because of the increased emphasis I had been putting on logistics and administrative work. I realised that unless we try something different we are unlikely to make any significant observations at the center. Today I thought I would try a new activity with some of the older children. I introduced the classic Name, Place, Animal and Thing game that I played when I was younger. Though the children were initially reluctant we had an absolute blast playing the game. We started off with two children but very soon the number grew to 10. The highlight however was that during the game I noticed something very interesting.
We had been keeping scores for all of us and for each category players would get 10 points for a unique answer and 5 points for an answer which was the same as someone else’s. Naturally the children were really thrilled in each round that they scored 40 points on. However, there was one case where they were even more excited. The few rounds where everyone scored 40 was a cause for even bigger cheer even though everyone scoring 40 points did not help anyone win or get ahead. What I had always played as a competitive game was much more collaborative in this setting and the children really wanted everyone to do well. It was almost as though they were celebrating each other's innovative answers and spurring their friends on. This was a really interesting twist to the game and definitely something that I learnt from the children.
