Today was one of the days where I felt that we’re starting to make progress in terms of finding a process and method to manage all this chaos. I’ve always been worried about scaling this program and wondering if we can really have an impact without our physical presence in space. Today, we experimented with some worksheets for the children. The worksheets were to introduce basic Kannada alphabets via activities like Join the Dots, Match the Following etc. The worksheets were quite successful for many of our learners and it was great to see the children working on them with the facilitator we have hired and in one or two cases with older learners as well. For the first time it felt that there’s some potential in this model to scale.
I noticed that the learners who took to the worksheets and were able to learn from them were the ones who have been at the center for almost a year. There is always a challenge to get the children comfortable with the idea of learning. Typically it has been through a lot of encouragement and dialogue from us. The learners who worked on the sheets today were ones who are past this stage and that is something we still need to figure out how to scale but today felt like a step in the right direction.
One of the biggest learnings from experimenting with the worksheets was that accessibility was super important. The learners were extremely happy and thrilled that the worksheets were achievable. I noticed learners voluntarily pick them up and work through them. At the same time the worksheets progressively became more and more challenging so there was a sense of pride as well as they finished a set.
When I made the worksheets I felt that it wouldn’t make much of a difference but I was surprised that with good engaging content the learners were happy to learn. The small things that I had done knowingly and some unknowingly seemed to go a long way. It might be a bit early to get excited about these sheets since we’ve only had about 10 worksheets for 10 children and mostly about concepts they’re not entirely unfamiliar with but I’m quite enthused how much of a difference it can make.
