I tried a slightly different approach with one of the learners who has been quite challenging for me. This particular learner has been super attached and very often would give me “katti” (meaning he would no longer be my friend) when I did not give in to his often unreasonable demands. Today I thought I would try to show him what that would feel like if I did it to him. I jokingly told him I would give him “katti” since he had left after the trip without so much as saying bye. This proved to be a huge mistake and what I was trying to achieve backfired completely. The learner took me very seriously and I wasn’t able to convey the humour and have him look at things from my perspective perhaps because of the language barrier. He stopped talking to me and he really took it to heart. The positive was that we were able to reset pretty soon and we ended up doing a colouring sheet together. It’s probably not the worst thing to try something different to see if we can convey a particular idea but perhaps I can think through this and be intentional about it. This was quite harmless so it was quite a good lesson for me as well.
