We visited a Project DEFY learning space in Kaggalipura today. The space was also a community center similar to ours but they had quite a different value system and a different model of working. The community center called a Nook was run by a project manager and was equipped with some computers, internet and various tools for anyone to come in and learn things. We interacted with the project manager and saw a lot of the projects that the learners had worked on. The projects were very varied right from jewellery to clothing to arts and science. It was amazing to see how learners were able to make so much happen with just access to the internet. It really helped me believe more and more in people’s potential to learn things.
The coordinator at Kaggalipura was from the Muslim community and talked about how her being a Muslim woman attracted many other women of her community. She had always wanted to study but had to get married at the age of 16 after reaching 10th standard. She felt it was only after coming to this Nook that she learnt a lot of things. I felt that by empowering her the center was able to attract those who were like her. It was really nice to observe how having a leader and role model like her also enabled a lot of other women from her community to join the center.
