Today while playing Kho Kho something very interesting happened. Typically what happens in Kho Kho is after you are done dodging you sit down for a round before taking your place among the chasers. It so happened that one of the faster runners, had just finished dodging. Unfortunately one of the other chasers did not want to play anymore since their leg was hurting.
I told the faster runner to take their place so that the ratio of faster and slower (typically younger) learners was good and the chasers would be able to catch the dodgers at a reasonable time rather than the game prolonging endlessly. I perhaps used the wrong language saying it would be difficult to catch the dodgers without the faster runner joining the chasers. Some older chasers took exception to this and pointed out that I was being unfair. I apologised to them. Later they pointed out to me that I had done this once earlier too. On another day the faster runner had been one of the successful dodgers and had not got caught for a long time. On that day I had referred to it in the circle and said I’d like to play more like him and asked him if he could teach me.
The learners talked to me saying that it was not fair to point out learners like that specifically as the faster runner had taken it to his head and was vain about his Kho Kho skills. They told me that they felt hurt. I thanked them for giving me feedback and was quite happy that they were able to come to me and talk to me about this. I explained to them my intention but perhaps I was too defensive. They apologised but I made sure that they knew they had no reason to and that giving feedback is awesome.
