Today I realised how much faith some of these learners have in their school teacher. We were working on a particular problem and one of the learners was convinced that I did not know how integers worked. The teacher had told her she had worked the problem right when she had written -7 -3 -1 = -10. We looked through previous examples and I asked her to think logically, however she was convinced that her teacher was right. She had understood logically how integers had worked and was able to perform the operations but she just could not bring herself to accept that her teacher had made a mistake. Eventually I pulled up my phone and I used my calculator to show her. I asked another girl from the school to come by and confirm that what I was saying was right too and that seemed to convince her finally. In a way it is good that the learners are able to challenge me, however it is a bit sad that their challenge is entirely based on their teacher's word.
